About Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme 2022 – 2023

Scholarships are fully funded by the Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme and can be used by South African students to study at Masters’s level at Ireland’s world-renowned institutions of higher learning.

As part of Ireland’s department of foreign affairs’ Ireland-Africa Fellows Programme, this flagship programme is offered by the Embassy of Ireland in South Africa. South African early-career professionals with leadership potential are encouraged to apply for the Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme.

Women’s leadership and STEM participation are key priorities for the scholarship, which supports the Sustainable Development Goals in general.

Students from Universities of Historical Disadvantage and Universities of Technology, in particular, are encouraged to apply for the Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme, which supports students who would not otherwise be able to attend master’s level education in Ireland.

As part of the Kader Asmal Fellowships, the following expenses will be covered:

  • Fees for applying to universities
  • Fees for tuition
  • The examination fee and other fees
  • The cost of economy class air travel to and from your home country to Ireland
  • An allowance for settling in, a book allowance, and an allowance for studying
  • Providing accommodations
  • Providing you with a monthly allowance to cover your personal living expenses (stipend)
  • Application fees for entry clearance (student visitor visas)

Eligible Courses: 

In addition to human rights, education, health, engineering, business, computer science, agriculture, and more, eligible courses are listed in the Directory of Eligible Programmes.

Eligibility Criteria For The Fellowship

In order to be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • South African nationality required
  • Work experience of at least two years (including volunteering and internships)
  • A first-class honours or second-class honours degree from a government-recognized higher education institution, at least a 75% grade point average – i.e. a first-class honour, or second-class honour, grade 1(2. Honor grade 2 may also be accepted).
  • You must not already hold a master’s degree or higher. Not currently enrolled in a master’s programme or higher, or not scheduled to start a master’s programme or higher in the 2022/23 academic year.
  • Applicants should apply for a master’s degree in Ireland no sooner than August/September 2023.
  • Show leadership potential and commitment to achieving the SDGs within your country, as well as leadership abilities.
  • Identify and select two relevant courses from the Ireland Fellows Programme Directory of Eligible Programmes.
  • You should have a solid understanding of both the academic and English language requirements for the courses you are considering.
  • Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme applicants must not have previously applied more than once.
  • The Fellowship must be available during the academic year 2022/23.
