Stellenbosch University GEM Scholarships 2023
Stellenbosch University’s Graduate School of Economics and Management Sciences (GEM) is now accepting applications for 2023. Applications will be accepted between 13th June and 1st August 2022 and PhD scholarship positions will be recruited. Scholarships will be funded by the Graduate School for up to R138 000 per year for three years. Scholarships are awarded based on the merits of each application.
The GEM scholarship will be awarded for Ph.D. studies at Stellenbosch University, in these Research Themes:
- Business Management
- Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST)
- Economics
- Industrial Psychology
- Logistics (Transport Economics)
- School for Public Leadership
- Stellenbosch Business School
- The Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management
Eligibility Criteria For The Scholarship
The following criteria must be met by candidates in order to be considered for a scholarship:
- For admission to a PhD at Stellenbosch University, candidates must meet the minimum requirements. In exceptional circumstances, an equivalent qualification may be accepted instead of a master’s degree.
- A master’s degree with a minimum grade point average of 65% is required.
- Applicants under the age of 40 will be given preference.
- It will be considered only if the application is within one of the Faculty’s Research Themes.
- A student who meets the criteria above will be considered for admission.
How to Apply For The Scholarship?
For applications to the Graduate School’s 2023 cohort, follow these steps:

- Scholarships can only be awarded when a suitable supervisor can be found for the topic.
- It is not a guarantee that your application will be accepted. Scholarship awards are based on competitiveness and there are limited scholarships available.
- Scholarship awards are at the discretion of the Graduate School.
- Make sure that you inform your three references that they need to submit their recommendations supporting your credentials for completing the doctoral studies to the email [email protected] by 1 August 2022.

NOTE: Due to the high number of applications received, they will only be able to contact candidates who have been shortlisted. You should consider your application unsuccessful if you have not heard by October 15th from the Graduate School Office.
Documents Required
In order to be considered for the scholarship program, applicants must submit the following documents:
- The scholarship application requires that you write a letter describing why you are qualified for it (maximum length: one page of A4).
- An outline of one or more research topics or problems that you intend to examine during your doctoral program (no maximum length).
- Applicants are required to complete each of these sections on their application form.
If you are having trouble deciding on a research topic, please consult the 2022 Research Themes. Only research topics falling within the current research themes in an academic department of the Faculty may be accommodated outside the listed research themes.
Closing Date Of The Scholarship
The last date of submission of the application is 1 August 2022. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
