SBF High School Scholarship 2023 – Eligibility, Application form & How to Apply

About the SBF

The Andreas and Susan Struengmann Foundation founded and funds the high school scholarship program known as Students For A Better Future in 2007. The Foundation was established to support educational initiatives in the Western Cape. The Foundation also funds the Disa Primary School in Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay and the Sue Struengmann Initiative at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

The Andreas and Susan Struengmann Foundation’s mission is to foster the growth of well-rounded, goal-oriented people who will benefit South Africa’s future and become global citizens.

SBF High School Scholarship 2023

SBF is providing an opportunity for students to apply for the high school scholarship for the academic year of 2024. The scholarship is for students studying in grade 6 who have excellent academic records and are economically deficient.

The selected students will be given a placement in any of the following SBF partnered schools:

  • SACS (South African College)
  • Springfield Convent
  • St George’s Grammar
  • Westerford
  • Camps Bay High
  • Groote Schuur High
  • Bergvliet High
  • Herschel Girls High
  • Rustenburg Girls High
  • Rondebosch Boys High
  • Wynberg Boys High.

Scholarship Coverage

The scholarship will provide the following benefits:

  • Cost of tuition.
  • Allowance for books and stationery.
  • Allowance for uniform.
  • Sports equipment.
  • Allowance for school trips.
  • Academic support and guidance.
  • Transport allowance (conditional).
  • Boarding house accommodation (conditional).

After the students have completed high school, they will be eligible to take part in the postsecondary programme which will provide the following benefits:

  • Financial support.
  • Personal (one-on-one) coaching.
  • Psychosocial guidance and support.
  • Academic guidance.
  • Strategic Partner and Stakeholder Coaching, as well as an Alumni Program.

Note:

  • Candidates must have an overall average score of 65% in their Matric to be eligible to apply for the post-secondary programme.
  • The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and other funding mechanisms provide financial assistance in accordance with a partial funding model, and students are required to give back by volunteering their time to mentor and tutor secondary school students.

Eligibility Criteria Of The Scholarship

Candidates must check the eligibility criteria before applying for the scholarship. There should not be any exceptions.

  • You must be in sixth grade in 2022.
  • You must be in the eighth grade in 2024.
  • You had to be born in 2010. (between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2010)
  • You must score an average of 60% on your Grade 5 final exams.
  • You must have received a minimum of 60% in Mathematics in your Grade 5 final exams.
  • You must have received a minimum of 60% in English in your Grade 5 final exams.
  • You must score an average of 60% in term 2 assessments of sixth grade.
  • The SBF Newlands Office must be within 25 kilometres of where you live in Cape Town, Western Cape (Letterstedt House Newlands on Main, Newlands)
  • You must need financial assistance and have a household income of NO MORE THAN R17 000 (for households with just one child), R20 000 (for households with two children), or R23 000 (for households with three or more children).

How to Apply For The Scholarship?

The applications have to be submitted online.

Note regarding the scholarship process:

  • Step 1: Between July 1 and August 31, 2022, applications are submitted.
  • Step 2: Candidates will hear back on September 16, 2022.
  • Step 3: On October 1, 2022, academic testing is administered.
  • Step 4: On October 10, 2022, an online test is administered.
  • Step 5: In November 2022, family interviews are conducted.
  • Step 6: In February 2023, offers are made to selected candidates.

Documents Required

All the mentioned documents must be attached to the application. If any documents are missing or false, the application will not be considered.

  • Certified copy of the birth certificate.
  • Certified copy of study visa for students without South African citizenship.
  • Final report of fifth grade.
  • Final report of 1 term of sixth grade.
  • Certified copy of valid ID documents of parents or guardians.
  • Certified copy of visa of parents or guardians or residential proof (for South African citizens).
  • Proof of household income of parents or guardians.
    • Payslips/employment letter (if currently employed).
    • Affidavit (if self-employed).
    • Proof of SASSA grant or pension.
  • An essay of 350 words answering the following question:
    • What would you wish for and why if you were granted three wishes?

Closing Date Of The Scholarship

The applications will be closed on 31 August 2022.

No late applications will be accepted so candidates must complete the application before the deadline.
