About Robben Island Museum (RIM)
Robben Island is an island in Cape Town, South Africa which imprisoned three of South Africa’s former presidents, Nelson Mandela, Kgalema Motlanthe and Jacob Zuma. The island is both a South African National Heritage Site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With the fall of the apartheid, the island has become a popular tourist destination.
Robben Island Museum (RIM) was founded in 1997 by the Department of Arts and Culture. Its purpose is to manage, maintain, develop and promote Robben Island as a national estate and World Heritage Site. RIM conserve the island’s natural resources and cultural heritage by implementing various conservation, research and tourist development programmes.
Robben Island Museum Bursaries
Robben Island Museum is now inviting South African postgraduates for its Internship and Bursary programme for the 2022 academic year.
The bursary will cover postgraduate studies in fields related to:
- Museums and Heritage studies
- Social Science
- History
- Oral History
- Heritage, as well as related disciplines.
RIM offers an Internship and Bursary Programme as a methodology to ensure access to and the conservation of the layered heritage of Robben Island (RI). This methodology contributes to the notion of RI as the “University of life”, as espoused by former political prisoners.
The bursary is granted to partially cover tuition fees, at a maximum amount of R35 000 per selected student.
Bursary holders will be required to do an Internship and Research programme at RIM Public Heritage Education Department (RIM PHED), as well as participate in various RIM programmes.
Bursary Requirements and Eligibility
- South African citizens
- Students who have applied independently at a South African University for the 2022 academic year
- Students applied to study towards a Postgraduate qualification, in one of the fields listed above
- Applicants who are registered to study accredited courses related to Museums and Heritage studies, Social Science, History or Oral History and Heritage

- Certified copies of tertiary level qualifications achieved
