Reporting to Crane & Rigging Supervisor

Overall purpose of the Position:
The primary objective will be to organise, check, handle and supervise the lifting, lowering or jacking of heavy station plant, machinery or working platforms from one position to another. Such activities shall be carried out at all times with full awareness of safety and emergency measures. You will also be responsible for the upholding of housekeeping standards in your workplace

Core Functions:

  • To inspect items to be moved, determine weight and decide on type of equipment to be used.
  • To ascertain job requirements from drawing or other specifications including lifting studies/plans.
  • To erect jib, derrick or similar hoisting equipment using winches as necessary and to install lifting tackle such as ropes and pulleys etc.
  • To attach slings, chains or other grappling equipment to the item to be moved and to connect to hoisting equipment.
  • To direct equipment operator to move object to required position.
  • To operate hydraulic jacking equipment and move objects on rollers.
  • To be trained and operate a Forklift Truck as per site/client requirements.
  • To adhere to all safety requirements including safety checks of tools and equipment.
  • To use all relevant workshops/site equipment associated with job requirements including all relevant training/certification requirements.
  • Carry out all necessary checks/inspections as stated in the manufactures specification/operating manual.
  • Ensure that all the lifting operations are within the safe working capacity of the crane.
  • Ensure that all lifting equipment is suitable and within compliance before lifting operations take place.
  • Supervise slinging operations.
  • Issue equipment as and when required.
  • Keep a record of all equipment issued and ensure it is timeously returned.
  • Check equipment on return for damage and immediately remove damaged or dangerous equipment from use.
  • Keep all lifting equipment registers up to date and ensure all test certificates filed.
  • Maintain up to date breakage register.
  • Assist in Rigging Store as and when required.
  • Ensure quarterly and yearly inspections are carried out.
  • Ensure effective implementation of security procedures in Rigging Store.
  • Ensure that loads hooked are within safe working limits.
  • Ensure ropes and winches are lubricated and worn cables are replaced.
  • Keep log book of all lifts.
  • Ensure inspections of slings, shackles etc. are carried out according to schedule.
  • Actively participate & encourage good housekeeping, teamwork and upholding of superior standards & general maintenance in your plant.
  • Develop a knowledge of Power Plant operation and generation of electricity

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualifications and Technical skills required:
  • Qualified Rigger Artisan with Matric or technical equivalent
  • 120T Crane Operator licence would be an advantage.
  • Experience with Lifting Equipment inspections would be an advantage
  • Experience Required:
  • Minimum 3 years general site experience at power station or similar industrial environment
