About Canon Collins Tom

The Canon Collins Tom Queba Memorial Fund is a charity set up in partnership with the Canon Collins Educational & Legal Assistance Trust. The charity was founded in 1981 to uplift improvised students in the UK and independent African states. The Canon Collins Trust has helped over 4,000 students in over 14 countries.

The memorial fund is named after Tom Queba, the former leader of the George taxi industry. Mr. Queba was committed to improving the public transport system in George. His efforts also contributed significantly to the minibus taxi industry. The fund was set up after his tragic death in 2014. The fund is responsible for running the Tom Queba Scholarship for Social Change.

Tom Queba Scholarship for Social Change Programme

The scholarship programme is designed to help certain students receive funding to further their education. They can be studying towards a Masters or Doctoral qualification.

The fund usually provides assistance to students in the social sciences domain. For the 2023 session, the areas accepted are:

  • Education
  • Humanities and the Arts
  • Justice
  • Sciences and Applied Sciences

So your Masters or Doctoral degree must be in the above areas of study. Both part-time and full-time students are eligible for it. So distance learning students can also apply for it.

Students are also evaluated based on their potential to bring about positive social or environmental change. They should have a willingness to improve the lives of the poor in South Africa.

Upon acceptance, students will be receiving funding for two years at max. They will also get a chance to enhance their leadership and employable skills through organized events. After two years, you can be a part of the community and increase your network.

For the 2023 session, the total scholarship amount to be distributed is R85,000.

Requirements and Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a black female

  • You should be willing to participate in the events organized by the trust throughout the year
